Just seems different to me, not unbalanced. Balance is a personal perspective, but it's mostly just variety here. The Spiritmancer is pretty awesome, but, if anything, it's a bit underpowered compared to the necromancer. (Not complaining, btw, HousePet. That golem is strangely durable and keeps enemies occupied much better than an alchemist golem, at least on Nightmare Diff. Doesn't kill them nearly as quick, but it hangs in there forever. Haven't had a chance to really develop a character, so my opinion is merely in its formative stages right now. I think I'll start a new one on Insane and see how that brings the balance into sharp relief.)

Yeah ToME is just a game where it takes you a lot to learn on how to deal with stuff. You have to be very very careful with your choices. Picking up skills thinking like "oh this looks cool" is not really an option and you aways have to think about the chalenges youre going to face like "I need to level rush so I don't get bursted by mobs before I get to them" or "I should level bone armor because Im too close to dying everytime" or even "I should go for some flat damage reduction cuz if I flurry a faerlhing I'm dead to reflect damage". It's just a lot of information and you aways end up finding new surprises that are hard to deal with. Planning ahead is key. In this game there are two very important things on you don't get fucked, to use right tools you have at the right times, and to prepare yourself to have the right tools when you need it. Some times doesn't matter how much or how well you deal with a situation, you just didn't plan ahead to have the right tools. And some times doesn't matter how OP you are you just don't take the right course of action and end up RIP, like hitting something while you have martyrdom debuff on you or ignoring a ritch flamespitter.

That'd be nice, maybe it'll help?

The problem with the people that struggle with normal is mostly that they play a couple dozen hours and think they have it all figured out (and tbh even 100h in this game is barely anything with all there is to learn, understand, and take in. It took me at least that long if not more for my first win.), ignore or argue heavily against experienced advice, and then die and blame all their problems on things like RNG and the game being unfair (which it isn't honestly), and refuse blame themselves and learn from their mistakes.
It's honestly hard to make progress and get anywhere with that mentality, I've seen a LOT of it and it happens often. I've even seen it bleed into threads in other games in the steam community hub like Dungeons of Dredmor, where people complained about how unfair ToME was and such things which made me frown a little to be honest.

Then open a chest. If the chest is unguarded, you are safe either way. If whatever comes out is weak, kill it quickly. Otherwise, as long as you are able to perserve for a small time, you have a good chance to be saved.

I read on the wiki the other day that the fateful conclusion to the Rolf and Weisman can be found by dwarves returning to the Deep Bellow. That and the loot makes up for the half lost randart, yeah?

    I think I'll make a dwarf next.

Rod of Recall requires 40 turn to teleport you. That's far too long when you are is trouble with close ennemies...

  • It was a good day to die..   10 years 50 weeks ago

sometimes they're stronker than boss that you just slained few turns ago

  • It was a good day to die..   10 years 50 weeks ago

u can use rod of recall for that

Strangely, I did things the opposite way. I played on roguelike until I got the hang of things (and beat the game), and now I switched to mostly doing adventurer. I think the initial kick of roguelike helps teach you to really focus on every move and figure out what does and doesn't work, even if it is somewhat harsh.

Welcome to ToME, where death is a way of life!

I would definitely suggest starting to play on Adventure until you get your first win before you move on to roguelike. It will help a lot when it comes to learning which situations you can survive and which you can't.

welcome to tome my friend, hope you enjoyed your deaths :P
my main suggestion here are that: the event's dungeons are better when you reached something like level 22 to unlock some skills that could help you in both killing and surviving, in your case you could have gone there when you first leveled unstoppable.
second one: check what tipe of debuff you had to get free with a wild infusion or a rune, if i remember, strangling is a physical effects and using a wild infusion that cured you from a phisical effect would had set you free, otherwise killing the enemy that applied it is another solution before you die by strangling.

  • Everything is Unique   10 years 50 weeks ago

The description should probably mention that you need another addon to achieve levels 50+, else the faster levelling won't make any sense...

Additionally, it is pretty unbalanced, full of unkillable bosses. Distasteful kind of madness, use at your own risk.

  • It was a good day to die..   10 years 50 weeks ago

Time to create another char whom awaits the same fate :p

  • It was a good day to die..   10 years 50 weeks ago

    thanks :3
I'll probably wait to get a teleport ability before I open a chest ever again :p

  • It was a good day to die..   10 years 50 weeks ago

shit happens when u play a kind of a squishy class and open the chest without preparing something to escape in case of danger :c
i might suggest you to play on adventure rather than roguelike to learn more about the game.
i hope u have a better luck with your next characters! :3

  • Frequently Asked Questions (ToME4)   10 years 50 weeks ago

The game runs fine, it opens, I can create and view characters, I can begin to play as the character and do any number of actions until an unknown short amount of time passes, then it 'stops' running. I say 'stops' because the game seems to continue, albeit sometimes somewhat slowly, under a still and frozen screen. I can continue to walk around, cast spells, and even die, but the screen refuses to update. If there is any more insight I can add to this I will try. I thoroughly enjoy ToME, I feel it is one of the finest crafted Roguelike games to date. The devotion of the devs and community is stellar. I have had an excellent experience playing this game since I have started.

After much settings changing, I have fixed the issue, and decided that framebuffering was the main culprit.

Where are the settings to change the game back to roguelike or multiple lives?

No need to respond - this is performed on character creation :)

    Thank you

    OP?

Is this mod OP even slightly? i dont have time to check and im wondering, cos i dont want to even minutely unbalance my game.

  • Arcanum Class Pack   11 years 1 day ago

Awesome addon!i love the enchanter and have lot of hours and fun on it.Thx :)
Enchant shield seems not work well as expected, the shield animated over my head offers armor and resid, but it dosn't defense like tk weapon's attack(this doesnt matter though). what bothers is that the block talent granted from the animated shield is always on strike by offering 0 block value.
And enchanter armor actually still stacks with armor training doubling armor and hardness, at both lv5 i get 300/143%(yeah baby, hardness over 100%)

  • Tired of Random BS   11 years 1 week ago

The RNG is a harsh mistress. There are so many damage/resist types that you cannot build a guaranteed safe character, and the corridor-heavy character of many zones makes summoners particularly dangerous. Phase door and teleport runes are popular early on, psychoport torques I find are usually later game (so much so, in my case anyway, that I usually don't need them by the time I find them).

I am not very experienced, but I do have a Yeek Mindslayer winner. In reading through your original post, two things stand out.

First, I push the Derth lightning fest out until I have some decent lightning resist, because the elementals are not always spaced out enough to take them on one at a time. That's just one of those areas that requires a specific set of things to address to minimize danger, otherwise it's a crap shoot.

Second, Lake Nur is one of those areas I'm always scared of - I *always* push that out, though I know it scales, because there are just too many things that can smoke you early. You need to be resilient in a host of different areas, and have a lot of capabilities, and even then it's still dangerous (rare worm-that-walks, shivers). That's one area I don't try to clear.

In the end, no, you cannot plan for all OODs. Sometimes you get hit with a bad crit, or a speedy tough regenerator, or a one-shot. That's just how it goes.
